A recent article in a journal with close ties to the Vatican published an article asserting an unhealthy “ecumenism of conflict” between Catholics and Evangelicals on the right, claiming they are pushing a dangerous theocratic vision on America. However, those who have carried forward the fairly successful Evangelical-Catholic ecumenism in the United States have been some of the best and the brightest of mainstream Catholics.
Many non-Catholics fear that unity with Rome would mean being swamped by the papacy, but by treating the head of the small Armenian Apostolic Church as a complete equal over the last three days, Pope Francis, in effect, suggested that in the end, size doesn’t matter.
Pope Francis will send high-level observers to the pan-Orthodox council meeting in Crete as a gesture of support for the Orthodox Church.
The Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church was scheduled to open June 19, which is Pentecost on the Julian calendar, and run through to June 26.
Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of Constantinople invited Pope Francis to send observers to the meeting on the Greek island of Crete, and the Pope chose Cardinal Kurt Koch and Bishop Brian Farrell, respectively the president and secretary of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity.
